Decorating with Antiques

by Crystal Lazaroo

The amazing thing about decorating with antiques is that they instantly add history and soul to a home. Antiques work with all décor styles; making a home unique, personal and interesting. There's something special about owning a piece of history; having something that was made and used in a time before you existed.

There are a few simple tips to consider when decorating with antiques to help keep your home looking fresh and collected.

1) Less is more.

Favour a substantial piece or worthy collection, such as glass cloches, vintage frames, or candlesticks.

2) Substance.

Choose substantial pieces that can transition well into any room and be used for multiple purposes. This will allow you to mix and match different pieces as your home style evolves. A favoured piece is an antique chest. A chest works well in almost any room in your home and will give your space a sense of style without trying too hard. See some examples below.

3) Vingette's

Create meaningful vignette's throughout your home with the addition of a few key antique pieces. Mix old with new, high end with bargain finds and play with textures and scale to create the right balance. I love domes and cloches. Often you come across metal bases, so when I spotted this wooded based collection...I knew I need to buy them all. They look great mixed in with other more modern pieces or grouped together as their own collection. Add some interest and texture to your walls with antique collectors items. One or two are often enough to make a statement. I really love the organic nature these skulls and horns provide to an otherwise structured and modern home.To purchase call 1300 732 849.

A few textural elements carefully placed add character and interest. A collection of crystals or vintage glassware can also work well.  I love the sculptural element these antler's provide. Piled high in a bowl (new or vintage), or singularly on top a stack of coffee table books look chic in a living room. To purchase, call 1300 732 849.

Recently, I've been working with a lovely client to find some new pieces for her vast historic home. With new renovations under way, it is important to maintain a sense of integrity while infusing her personal modern country aesthetic throughout.

A dough bowl was on her list. And I found one! Dough bowls are a great accessory for kitchens and bathrooms and can even be used all year around to create interesting centre pieces, which makes it's a versatile and affordable item.

Scouring antique shops or fairs to find worthy collections to add charm and character to your home can be fun. Make a list and stick to it. It may take a few trips to find what you're looking for because decorating a collected home will take some time. The best homes are collected homes, where each piece is meaningful, has a story and is created over time. Enjoy the journey and the experience. Do you have a favourite antique piece? Share your experience with us, we'd love to hear from you.
