Lydon Project Reveal : Modern Farmhouse - Part 1

by Crystal Lazaroo

We’re excited to introduce part one of our #Lydon Project: a warm, inviting Modern Farmhouse for a family of six and their beloved chocolate lab, Molly. This single-storey farmhouse, built in 1998 nestled on 6 acres of bush land, south of Perth, had already undergone extensive renovations when we came on board, including a new kitchen, main bathroom, and laundry, all new windows and doors, jarrah floorboards, and a vaulted ceiling featuring skylights in the main living area.

Feeling overwhelmed by the process and ready to complete her home, our client reached out for help with paint selections and furnishing key spaces, With painters scheduled to start in two weeks and a holiday in four, we quickly selected warm, natural hues inspired by nature for the main living areas, boys' bedroom, and playroom.

The ENTRY features a wide door leading into the dining room, highlighting the desire to create an intentional 'entry moment.' A simple farmhouse console in contrasting timber balances form with function. A round mirror contrasts the room's rectangular shapes, while an oversized lamp adds visual impact. Decorative touches include a framed print on a mini easel, an organic-shaped timber bowl for keys, and greenery to echo the nearby bushland. A large woven basket adds texture and works as storage for pet items, while a large ceramic pot enhances corner interest without obstructing the door.

Designing the DINING ROOM for eight was challenging due to its long, narrow layout. We opted for a custom farmhouse-style table made from reclaimed timber in a rich finish to complement the wooden floors. Pairing this warm table with black spindle-style timber chairs was a practical choice that perfectly enhances the farmhouse aesthetic. Keeping the styling simple for everyday use, is a woven rattan tray perfectly placed to corral a vintage pot filled with wildflowers, placemats and napkins.

The LIVING ROOM truly is the heart of family life! We created a perfect blend of living, relaxation and storage in this inviting space. Introducing a warm and welcoming palette of terracotta, black, and olive green to coordinate with existing neutral grey sofas, we welcomed subtle pattern and texture in muted tones through the rug, soft furnishings and decor selections. A beautiful antique Indian coffee table anchors the room, enhancing its cozy vibe and bringing interest to the space. We added two rich cognac leather chairs for warmth and depth, complemented by a small metal side table for family chess matches. A floor lamp introduces height and softens the space, casting a welcoming glow at night. We selected a muted rug in colours of olive, charcoal and beige, for the perfect layer for busy family life, adding pattern and character. The statement bookcase in black and white was the final touch, offering scale and much desired storage. We had fun styling this bookcase, with many personal items and vintage pieces sourced especially for our client.
